It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Rsync (unknown version). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Checksum Handler. The manipulation of the argument s2length with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the rsync daemon. This issue is due to improper handling of attacker-controlled checksum lengths (s2length) in the code. When MAX_DIGEST_LEN exceeds the fixed SUM_LENGTH (16 bytes), an attacker can write out of bounds in the sum2 buffer.
The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-12084. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214143 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : rsync vulnerabilities (USN-7206-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
