Rsync Checksum s2length uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Rsync. It has been declared as problematic. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Checksum Handler. Such manipulation of the argument s2length leads to uninitialized pointer. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2024-12085. There is not any exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Rsync (version now known). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Checksum Handler. The manipulation of the argument s2length with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in rsync which could be triggered when rsync compares file checksums. This flaw allows an attacker to manipulate the checksum length (s2length) to cause a comparison between a checksum and uninitialized memory and leak one byte of uninitialized stack data at a time.

The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-12085. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214143 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : rsync vulnerabilities (USN-7206-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (214143), EUVD (EUVD-2024-50581) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2633). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
