Buffer overflow in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, XP SP3, and other versions and packages, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a routing slip that is longer than specified by the provided length field, as exploited by malware such as TROJ_MDROPPER.BH and Trojan.PPDropper.E in attacks against PowerPoint.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2006. The weakness was published 03/14/2006 by Ollie Whitehouse with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0009 since 11/09/2005. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2472 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
