Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2000, 2002, and 2003, in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 and other packages, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a BIFF parsing format file containing malformed BOOLERR records that lead to memory corruption, probably involving invalid pointers.
The bug was discovered 01/24/2006. The weakness was released 03/14/2006 by Arnaud Dovi aka 'class101' (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0028 since 11/30/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
