A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software). This issue affects an unknown part. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2000, 2002, and 2003, in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 and other packages, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed description, which leads to memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2006 by Dejun Meng with Microsoft (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0029 since 11/30/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2472 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21078 (MS06-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (905413)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90303 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-012)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
