Linux Kernel up to 6.1.124/6.6.71/6.12.9/6.13-rc6 iio_for_each_active_channel information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.124/6.6.71/6.12.9/6.13-rc6. Affected is the function iio_for_each_active_channel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: imu: kmx61: fix information leak in triggered buffer The 'buffer' local array is used to push data to user space from a triggered buffer, but it does not set values for inactive channels, as it only uses iio_for_each_active_channel() to assign new values. Initialize the array to zero before using it to avoid pushing uninitialized information to userspace.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-57908 since 01/19/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 215144 (Debian dsa-5860 : affs-modules-6.1.0-21-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.125, 6.6.72, 6.12.10 or 6.13-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6985ba4467e4b15b809043fa7740d1fb23a1897b/cde312e257b59ecaa0fad3af9ec7e2370bb24639/565814cbbaa674d2901428796801de49a611e59d/6ae053113f6a226a2303caa4936a4c37f3bfff7b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (215144) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0119). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
