Linux Kernel up to 6.12.9/6.13-rc6 iio_for_each_active_channel information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.9/6.13-rc6. Affected by this vulnerability is the function iio_for_each_active_channel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: light: bh1745: fix information leak in triggered buffer The 'scan' local struct is used to push data to user space from a triggered buffer, but it does not set values for inactive channels, as it only uses iio_for_each_active_channel() to assign new values. Initialize the struct to zero before using it to avoid pushing uninitialized information to userspace.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-57909 since 01/19/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 6.12.10 or 6.13-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1cca2a666e099aa018e5ab385f0a6e01a3053629/b62fbe3b8eedd3cf3c9ad0b7cb9f72c3f40815f0 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0119). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
