Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Data Access Components 2.x. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component ADODB.Connection ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Execute method in the ADODB.Connection 2.7 and 2.8 ActiveX control objects (ADODB.Connection.2.7 and ADODB.Connection.2.8) in the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 SP3, 2.7 SP1, 2.8, and 2.8 SP1 does not properly track freed memory when the second argument is a BSTR, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (Internet Explorer crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via certain strings in the second and third arguments.
The bug was discovered 10/24/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2007 by Yag Kohha as MS07-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5559 since 10/27/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24333 (MS07-009: Vulnerability in Microsoft Data Access Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (927779)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90385 (Microsoft Data Access Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-009)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7866. In this case the pattern 00000514-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4926.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29837), Exploit-DB (2629), Tenable (24333), SecurityFocus (BID 20704†) and OSVDB (31882†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
