A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Interactive Training 3.x. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Bookmark Link File Handler. Buffer overflow in the Step-by-Step Interactive Training in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and Professional, and Server 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long Syllabus string in crafted bookmark link files (cbo, cbl, or .cbm), a different issue than CVE-2005-1212.
The bug was discovered 05/01/2006. The weakness was released 02/13/2007 by Brett Moore with Security-Assessment.com as MS07-005 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3448 since 07/07/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 288 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-005 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4195. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4898.
