A vulnerability was found in Crafty Syntax Image Gallery up to 3.1g (Photo Gallery Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the file newimage.php. The manipulation of the argument ext with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. newimage.php in Eric Gerdes Crafty Syntax Image Gallery (CSIG) (aka PHP thumbnail Photo Gallery) 3.1g and earlier allows remote authenticated users to upload and execute arbitrary PHP code via a multipart/form-data POST with a .jpg filename in the fullimage parameter and the ext parameter set to .php.
The weakness was presented 04/04/2006 by r0t (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1668 since 04/07/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by undefined1_ in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:newimage.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
