Cisco IOS/CatOS NAM SNMP input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS and CatOS (Router Operating System) (version now known). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component NAM SNMP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Network Analysis Module (NAM) in Cisco Catalyst Series 6000, 6500, and 7600 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via certain SNMP packets that are spoofed from the NAM s own IP address.

The bug was discovered 02/28/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2007 with Cisco (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1257 since 03/03/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24737 (Cisco Multiple Products Network Analysis Module (NAM) SNMP Spoofing Remote Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO, running in the context l and relying on port 161. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43129 (Cisco Multiple Products Network Analysis Module SNMP Communication Spoofing Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20070228-nam)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32750), Tenable (24737), SecurityFocus (BID 22751†), OSVDB (33066†) and Secunia (SA24344†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
