Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.121/5.15.46/5.17.14/5.18.3. This affects the function sd_probe. Such manipulation of the argument sdkp->device leads to null pointer dereference.
This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2022-49376. There is no available exploit.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.121/5.15.46/5.17.14/5.18.3. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function sd_probe. The manipulation of the argument sdkp->device with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: sd: Fix potential NULL pointer dereference If sd_probe() sees an early error before sdkp->device is initialized, sd_zbc_release_disk() is called. This causes a NULL pointer dereference when sd_is_zoned() is called inside that function. Avoid this by removing the call to sd_zbc_release_disk() in sd_probe() error path. This change is safe and does not result in zone information memory leakage because the zone information for a zoned disk is allocated only when sd_revalidate_disk() is called, at which point sdkp->disk_dev is fully set, resulting in sd_disk_release() being called when needed to cleanup a disk zone information using sd_zbc_release_disk().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49376 since 02/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 238226 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1635)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.122, 5.15.47, 5.17.15 or 5.18.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c1f0187025905e9981000d44a92e159468b561a8/0fcb0b131cc90c8f523a293d84c58d0c7273c96f/78f8e96df06e2d04d82d4071c299b59d28744f47/3733439593ad12f7b54ae35c273ea6f15d692de3/05fbde3a77a4f1d62e4c4428f384288c1f1a0be5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
