Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1 of_parse_phandle reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function of_parse_phandle. Performing a manipulation results in reference count. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2022-49240. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function of_parse_phandle. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: mediatek: mt8195: Fix error handling in mt8195_mt6359_rt1019_rt5682_dev_probe The device_node pointer is returned by of_parse_phandle() with refcount incremented. We should use of_node_put() on it when done. This function only calls of_node_put() in the regular path. And it will cause refcount leak in error path.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49240 since 02/26/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c652f8f0875b569f8afa80b8cf9762828fd6187b/c4b7174fe5bb875a09a78674a14a1589d1a672f3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
