Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.32/5.16.18/5.17.1. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function of_parse_phandle. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: atmel: Fix error handling in snd_proto_probe The device_node pointer is returned by of_parse_phandle() with refcount incremented. We should use of_node_put() on it when done. This function only calls of_node_put() in the regular path. And it will cause refcount leak in error paths. Fix this by calling of_node_put() in error handling too.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-49246 since 02/26/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 225794 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-49246), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.15.33, 5.16.19 or 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
