Linux Kernel 2.6.20.2 Filter memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel 2.6.20.2. This impacts an unknown function of the component Filter. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2007-1497. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.20.2 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component Filter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

nf_conntrack in netfilter in the Linux kernel before 2.6.20.3 does not set nfctinfo during reassembly of fragmented packets, which leaves the default value as IP_CT_ESTABLISHED and might allow remote attackers to bypass certain rulesets using IPv6 fragments.

The issue has been introduced in 02/05/2007. The weakness was shared 03/14/2007 by Patrick with Kernel.org (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1497 since 03/16/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 37 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43641 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2007:0347)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156097 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0347)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.20.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33210), Tenable (43641), SecurityFocus (BID 23976†), OSVDB (33028†) and Secunia (SA24492†). The entries VDB-2978, VDB-3041, VDB-3146 and VDB-3293 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
