Apple AirPort IPv6 Routing denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple AirPort and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component IPv6 Routing. The manipulation leads to denial of service. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2007-2242. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple AirPort (Router Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component IPv6 Routing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPv6 protocol allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via crafted IPv6 type 0 route headers (IPV6_RTHDR_TYPE_0) that create network amplification between two routers.

The bug was discovered 04/23/2007. The weakness was presented 09/05/2007 by Philippe Biondi Arnaud Ebalard with OpenBSD (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2242 since 04/25/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30142 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : kernel (kernel-4929)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156097 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0347)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33851), Tenable (30142), SecurityFocus (BID 23615†), OSVDB (35303†) and Secunia (SA26703†). See VDB-2979, VDB-2978, VDB-3041 and VDB-3146 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
