MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.2 lib/rpc/svc_auth_gss.c RPCSEC_GSS memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.2 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file lib/rpc/svc_auth_gss.c. The manipulation of the argument RPCSEC_GSS with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the svcauth_gss_validate function in lib/rpc/svc_auth_gss.c in the RPCSEC_GSS RPC library (librpcsecgss) in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.4 through 1.6.2, as used by the Kerberos administration daemon (kadmind) and some third-party applications that use krb5, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) and probably execute arbitrary code via a long string in an RPC message.

The weakness was disclosed 09/05/2007 by Garrett Wollman with Tenable (Website). The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3999 since 07/25/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67562 (Oracle Linux 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2007-0858)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156043 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Krb5 (ELSA-2007-0858)).

Upgrading to version krb5-1.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12424. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5503.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36437), Tenable (67562), SecurityFocus (BID 25534†), OSVDB (37324†) and Secunia (SA26676†). The entries VDB-3291 and VDB-38642 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
