Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.5 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function lzwdecodevector of the component ImageIO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the LZWDecodeVector function in Mac OS X before 10.4.6, as used in applications that use ImageIO or AppKit, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted TIFF images.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2006. The weakness was released 04/20/2006 by Tom Ferris (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1982 since 04/21/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21341 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115357 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-05-11)).
Upgrading to version 10.4.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 33605.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25981), Exploit-DB (27714), Tenable (21341), SecurityFocus (BID 17951†) and OSVDB (31837†).
