Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.6 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function cfallocatorallocate of the component ImageIO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in Mac OS X 10.4.6 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) PredictorVSetField function for TIFF or (2) CFAllocatorAllocate function for GIF, as used in applications that use ImageIO or AppKit. NOTE: the BMP vector has been re-assigned to CVE-2006-2238 because it affects a separate product family.
The bug was discovered 04/19/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/19/2006 by Tom Ferris (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1983 since 04/21/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21341 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115357 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-05-11)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 33605.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25950), Tenable (21341), SecurityFocus (BID 17951†), OSVDB (24821†) and Secunia (SA19686†). The entries VDB-2230, VDB-2232, VDB-2228 and VDB-2227 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
