Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.0.x (Application Server Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component HTTP Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
CRLF injection vulnerability in IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) before 6.0.2.19 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via a single CRLF sequence in a context that is not a valid multi-line header.
The bug was discovered 03/20/2007. The weakness was published 03/21/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1608 since 03/22/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45416 (IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.0 < 6.0.2.19 HTTP Response Splitting), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87056 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Unspecified HTTP Response Splitting (PK39732)).
Upgrading to version 6.1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33123), Tenable (45416), SecurityFocus (BID 23086†), OSVDB (34484†) and Secunia (SA24552†). Similar entry is available at VDB-2982. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
