The handle_response function in chan_sip.c in Asterisk before 1.2.17 and 1.4.x before 1.4.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a SIP Response code 0 in a SIP packet.
The weakness was presented 03/22/2007 by qwerty1979 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sineapps.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1594 since 03/22/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24934 (GLSA-200704-01 : Asterisk: Two SIP Denial of Service vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38579 (Asterisk SIP Channel Driver Reponse Code Zero Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12072. In this case the pattern SIP/2.0 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8991.
