A vulnerability was found in Squid Proxy up to 2.6.STABLE11 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component TRACE Request Handler. The clientProcessRequest() function in src/client_side.c in Squid 2.6 before 2.6.STABLE12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via crafted TRACE requests that trigger an assertion error.
The weakness was disclosed 03/23/2007 with Squid Projekt (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1560 since 03/21/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67467 (Oracle Linux 5 : squid (ELSA-2007-0131)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156086 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Squid (ELSA-2007-0131)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at squid-cache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15941. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12430.
