Details
A vulnerability was found in Invision Power Services IP.Board up to 2.1.x (Forum Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function preg_replace of the file search.php. The manipulation of the argument lastdate with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
action_public/search.php in Invision Power Board (IPB) 2.1.x and 2.0.x before 20060425 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a search with a crafted value of the lastdate parameter, which alters the behavior of a regular expression to add a "#e" (execute) modifier.
The weakness was disclosed 04/25/2006 by IceShaman and Wells (Website). The advisory is shared for download at forums.invisionpower.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2059 since 04/26/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at digitalsec.es. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:search.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21307 (Invision Power Board 2.x.x < 04-25-06 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 2.1.x eliminates this vulnerability.
