A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.1/5.5/6.0 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown part of the component dragDrop. The file upload control in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 allows remote attackers to automatically upload files from the local system via a web page containing a script to upload the files.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was presented 02/03/2003 by Jelmer as MS03-015 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0114 since 02/26/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is shared for download at kuperus.xs4all.nl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1183 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10861 (MS02-005: MSIE 5.01 5.5 6.0 Cumulative Patch (890923)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying the patch MS03-015 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
