A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (Web Browser). Affected is the function getComponent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Internet Explorer 5.01 through 6 SP1 allows remote attackers to bypass zone restrictions and read arbitrary files via an XML object.
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was presented 11/10/2003 by Sam Schinke as MS03-048 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0817 since 09/18/2003. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 960 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10861 (MS02-005: MSIE 5.01 5.5 6.0 Cumulative Patch (890923)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100003 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update Not Installed (MS03-048)).
Applying the patch MS03-048 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
