Internet Explorer 5.01 through 6 SP1 allows remote attackers to bypass zone restrictions and read arbitrary files via an XML object.
The weakness was disclosed 11/07/2003 by Jelmer (Website). The advisory is shared at safecenter.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0817 since 09/18/2003. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at safecenter.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100003 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update Not Installed (MS03-048)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
