Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003 DNS Service memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component DNS Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the RPC interface in the Domain Name System (DNS) Server Service in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP 4, Server 2003 SP 1, and Server 2003 SP 2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long zone name containing character constants represented by escape sequences.

The bug was discovered 04/12/2007. The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2007 with 0-Day as MS07-029 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1748 since 03/29/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at immunitysec.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2612 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72832 (MS07-029: Vulnerability in Windows DNS RPC Interface Could Allow Remote Code Execution (935966) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90394 (Windows DNS RPC Interface Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS07-029)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10900. In this case the pattern |05 00 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5290.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33629), Exploit-DB (3737), Zero-Day.cz (131), Tenable (72832) and SecurityFocus (BID 23470†). Further details are available at news.com.com. The entries VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
