Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.15 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function lease_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
lease_init in fs/locks.c in Linux kernel before 2.6.16.16 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (fcntl_setlease lockup) via actions that cause lease_init to free a lock that might not have been allocated on the stack.
The bug was discovered 05/07/2006. The weakness was published 05/11/2006 by Daniel Hokka Zakrisson (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1860 since 04/19/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 52 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22058 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165140 (SUSE Security Update for kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:042)).
