Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.16 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument and with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
SCTP in Linux kernel before 2.6.16.17 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a chunk length that is inconsistent with the actual length of provided parameters.
The bug was discovered 05/19/2006. The weakness was released 05/22/2006 by Mu Security with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us.debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1858 since 04/19/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22279 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0617)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.16.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26585), Tenable (22279), SecurityFocus (BID 18085†), OSVDB (25696†) and Secunia (SA20185†).
