Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.154/5.15.78/6.0.8. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component bpftool. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpftool: Fix NULL pointer dereference when pin {PROG, MAP, LINK} without FILE When using bpftool to pin {PROG, MAP, LINK} without FILE, segmentation fault will occur. The reson is that the lack of FILE will cause strlen to trigger NULL pointer dereference. The corresponding stacktrace is shown below: do_pin do_pin_any do_pin_fd mount_bpffs_for_pin strlen(name) <- NULL pointer dereference Fix it by adding validation to the common process.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-49875 since 05/01/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 249320 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1979)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.155, 5.15.79 or 6.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8c80b2fca4112d724dde477aed13f7b0510a2792/6dcdd1b68b7f9333d48d48fc77b75e7f235f6a4a/da5161ba94c5e9182c301dd4f09c94f715c068bd/34de8e6e0e1f66e431abf4123934a2581cb5f133 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
