Linux Kernel up to 6.12.25/6.14.4/6.15-rc3 riscv test_progs random values

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.25/6.14.4/6.15-rc3. Affected is the function test_progs of the component riscv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a random values vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-330. The product uses insufficiently random numbers or values in a security context that depends on unpredictable numbers. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: riscv: uprobes: Add missing fence.i after building the XOL buffer The XOL (execute out-of-line) buffer is used to single-step the replaced instruction(s) for uprobes. The RISC-V port was missing a proper fence.i (i$ flushing) after constructing the XOL buffer, which can result in incorrect execution of stale/broken instructions. This was found running the BPF selftests "test_progs: uprobe_autoattach, attach_probe" on the Spacemit K1/X60, where the uprobes tests randomly blew up.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-37822 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240657 (Ubuntu 25.04 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7594-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.26, 6.14.5 or 6.15-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bcf6d3158c5902d92b6d62335af4422b7bf7c4e2/1dbb95a36499374c51b47ee8ae258a8862c20978/7d1d19a11cfbfd8bae1d89cc010b2cc397cd0c48 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240657), EUVD (EUVD-2025-13962) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0975). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
