Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.135/6.6.87/6.12.24/6.14.3/6.15-rc2. Impacted is the function sc7280_snd_hw_params of the component ASoC. Performing a manipulation results in buffer overflow.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-37979. No exploit is available.
It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.135/6.6.87/6.12.24/6.14.3/6.15-rc2. This affects the function sc7280_snd_hw_params of the component ASoC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: qcom: Fix sc7280 lpass potential buffer overflow Case values introduced in commit 5f78e1fb7a3e ("ASoC: qcom: Add driver support for audioreach solution") cause out of bounds access in arrays of sc7280 driver data (e.g. in case of RX_CODEC_DMA_RX_0 in sc7280_snd_hw_params()). Redefine LPASS_MAX_PORTS to consider the maximum possible port id for q6dsp as sc7280 driver utilizes some of those values. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-37979 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/16/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 237504 (Debian dla-4193 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.136, 6.6.88, 6.12.25, 6.14.4 or 6.15-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d78888853eb53f47ae16cf3aa5d0444d0331b9f8/a12c14577882b1f2b4cff0f86265682f16e97b0c/c0ce01e0ff8a0d61a7b089ab309cdc12bc527c39/b807b7c81a6d066757a94af7b8fa5b6a37e4d0b3/a31a4934b31faea76e735bab17e63d02fcd8e029 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (237504) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1114). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
