Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.15 (Operating System). This affects the function strnlen_user of the component strnlen_user. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The strnlen_user function in Linux kernel before 2.6.16 on IBM S/390 can return an incorrect value, which allows local users to cause a denial of service via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 03/11/2006. The weakness was released 06/27/2006 by David Howells with Redhat (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0456 since 01/27/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 108 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22276 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0575)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115389 (Linux Kernel Unspecified Socket Buffer Handling Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.6.16 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30090), Tenable (22276), SecurityFocus (BID 18687†), OSVDB (26997†) and Secunia (SA20914†).
