A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Drag/Drop. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 does not properly handle Drag and Drop events, which allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a link to an SMB file share with a filename that contains encoded ..\ (%2e%2e%5c) sequences and whose extension contains the CLSID Key identifier for HTML Applications (HTA), aka "Folder GUID Code Execution Vulnerability." NOTE: directory traversal sequences were used in the original exploit, although their role is not clear.
The issue has been introduced in 08/27/2001. The weakness was presented 06/28/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3281. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1766 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22187 (MS06-045: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (921398)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90344 (Microsoft Windows Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-045)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4304.
