Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.x (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ftdi_sio driver (usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c) in Linux kernel 2.6.x up to 2.6.17, and possibly later versions, allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by writing more data to the serial port than the hardware can handle, which causes the data to be queued.
The bug was discovered 07/17/2006. The weakness was released 07/04/2006 by Justin M. Forbes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2936 since 06/09/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27292 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : kernel (kernel-2635)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27807), Tenable (27292), SecurityFocus (BID 19033†), OSVDB (27119†) and Secunia (SA21057†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2256, VDB-2254, VDB-2255 and VDB-2257. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
