Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The Server Service (SRV.SYS driver) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, Server 2003 up to SP1, and other products, allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via crafted requests that leak information in SMB buffers, which are not properly initialized, aka "SMB Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 07/11/2006 by Mike Price and Rafal Wojtczuk (McAfee) with Tenable Network Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1315 since 03/19/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22034 (MS06-035: Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (917159) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90329 (Microsoft Windows Server Driver Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-035)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4266.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26880), Exploit-DB (2057), Tenable (22034), SecurityFocus (BID 18891†) and OSVDB (27155†).
