Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP Server Protocol Driver Server Message Block heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP and classified as critical. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Server Protocol Driver. The manipulation as part of Server Message Block results in heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1314. Furthermore, an exploit is available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code of the component Server Protocol Driver. The manipulation as part of a Server Message Block leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the Server Service (SRV.SYS driver) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, Server 2003 up to SP1, and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted first-class Mailslot messages that triggers memory corruption and bypasses size restrictions on second-class Mailslot messages.

The bug was discovered 03/11/2006. The weakness was published 07/11/2006 by Nicolas Pouvesle, Mike Price and Rafal Wojtczuk (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint Security Research Team as MS06-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1314 since 03/20/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2336 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22029 (MS06-035: Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (917159)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90329 (Microsoft Windows Server Driver Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-035)).

Applying the patch MS06-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4266.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26880), Exploit-DB (2057), Tenable (22029), SecurityFocus (BID 18863†) and OSVDB (27154†).
