Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Samba. The affected element is an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in memory allocation. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2006-3403. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Samba (File Transfer Software). This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The smdb daemon (smbd/service.c) in Samba 3.0.1 through 3.0.22 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of share connection requests.
The bug was discovered 07/10/2006. The weakness was disclosed 07/12/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3403 since 07/06/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22108 (GLSA-200607-10 : Samba: Denial of Service vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115471 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-11-28)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27648), Tenable (22108), SecurityFocus (BID 18927†), OSVDB (27130†) and Secunia (SA20980†). The entries VDB-27241, VDB-32357, VDB-32356 and VDB-33509 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
