gzip 1.3.5 make_table memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in gzip 1.3.5. This vulnerability affects the function make_table. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the make_table function in the LHZ component in gzip 1.3.5 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted decoding table in a GZIP archive.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2006. The weakness was released 09/19/2006 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4337 since 08/24/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22422 (CentOS 3 / 4 : gzip (CESA-2006:0667)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185008 (HP-UX Update for Software Distributor Package Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02195)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11785.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29045), Tenable (22422), SecurityFocus (BID 20101†), OSVDB (29007†) and Secunia (SA21996†).
