Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in YaBB 2.0/2.0 Rc1/2.0 Rc2/2.1 (Forum Software). Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument userlanguage with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Yet another Bulletin Board (YaBB) 2.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary Perl code via a .. (dot dot) in the userlanguage profile setting, which sets the userlanguage key of the member hash, and is propagated to the language variable in (1) HelpCentre.pl and (2) ICQPager.pl, (3) the use_lang variable in Subs.pl, and the actlang variable in (4) Post.pl and (5) InstantMessage.pl; as demonstrated by pointing userlanguage to the English folder, modifying English/HelpCentre.lng file to contain Perl statements, and then invoking the help action in YaBB.pl.
The weakness was shared 06/21/2007 by Maciej Kukla (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3295 since 06/20/2007. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component.
