PHP 5.2.3 Tidy Extension tidy_parse_string memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in PHP 5.2.3. Affected is the function tidy_parse_string of the component Tidy Extension. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2007-3294. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is preferable to disable the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in PHP 5.2.3 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function tidy_parse_string of the component Tidy Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in libtidy, as used in the Tidy extension for PHP 5.2.3 and possibly other products, allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long second argument to the tidy_parse_string function or (2) an unspecified vector to the tidy_repair_string function. NOTE: this might only be an issue in environments where vsnprintf is implemented as a wrapper for vsprintf.

The weakness was published 06/21/2007 by rgod (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-3294 since 06/20/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by rgod and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25971 (PHP < 5.2.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34931), Exploit-DB (4080), Tenable (25971), SecurityFocus (BID 24527†) and OSVDB (36853†). Similar entries are available at VDB-35567, VDB-38254, VDB-38011 and VDB-37828. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
