Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Thomas Boutell GD Graphics Library up to 2.0.35 (Image Processing Software). This affects the function gdImageCreateTrueColor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The gdPngReadData function in libgd 2.0.34 allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted PNG image with truncated data, which causes an infinite loop in the png_read_info function in libpng.
The weakness was presented 06/27/2007 by Xavier Roche with libgd.org (Website). The advisory is shared at libgd.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2756 since 05/18/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67570 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : php (ELSA-2007-0890)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350098 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libwmf: ALAS-2015-604).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34420), Tenable (67570), SecurityFocus (BID 24089†), OSVDB (36643†) and Secunia (SA27545†).
