Details
A vulnerability was found in Thomas Boutell GD Graphics Library up to 2.x (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gdImageStringFTEx of the component JIS Font Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the gdImageStringFTEx function in gdft.c in GD Graphics Library 2.0.33 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted string with a JIS encoded font.
The bug was discovered 01/26/2006. The weakness was disclosed 01/29/2007 by Kees Cook as Bug 224607 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0455 since 01/23/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 368 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67471 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : php (ELSA-2007-0155)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350098 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libwmf: ALAS-2015-604).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at boutell.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40953), Tenable (67471), SecurityFocus (BID 22289†), OSVDB (33008†) and Secunia (SA25575†).
