Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in libtiff up to 3.8.1 (Image Processing Software). This vulnerability affects the function tifffetchshortpair of the file tif_dirread.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the TIFF library (libtiff) before 3.8.2, as used in Adobe Reader 9.3.0 and other products, allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors, including a large tdir_count value in the TIFFFetchShortPair function in tif_dirread.c.
The bug was discovered 02/16/2010. The weakness was presented 08/02/2006 by Tavis Ormandy (iDefense) with Mozilla Corporation (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3459 since 07/10/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22165 (GLSA-200608-07 : libTIFF: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156193 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libtiff (ELSA-2006:0603)).
Upgrading to version 3.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8584.
