A vulnerability was found in SAP Message Server (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument group with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Message HTTP Server in SAP Message Server allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string in the group parameter to /msgserver/html/group.
The bug was discovered 07/05/2007. The weakness was released 07/06/2007 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is available at ngssoftware.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3624 since 07/09/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sap.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 14600. In this case the pattern GET /msgserver/html/group?group= is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5462.
