Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.22 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function decode_choice. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The signal handling in the Linux kernel before 2.6.22, including 2.6.2, when running on PowerPC systems using HTX, allows local users to cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors involving floating point corruption and concurrency, related to clearing of MSR bits.
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2007 by Zhonglin Weng with Redhat (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3107 since 06/07/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67537 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2007-0595)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165049 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2007:053)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35383), Tenable (67537), SecurityFocus (BID 24845†), OSVDB (37118†) and Secunia (SA25963†). The entries VDB-3168, VDB-24081 and VDB-37715 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
