A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.5 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Video File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Integer overflow in the FlipFileTypeAtom_BtoN function in Apple Quicktime 7.1.5, and other versions before 7.2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted M4V (MP4) file.
The bug was discovered 11/17/2006. The weakness was presented 07/12/2007 by Tom Ferris with Apple (Website). The advisory is shared for download at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2296 since 04/26/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 160 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25704 (QuickTime < 7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115541 (Apple QuickTime 7.2 Not Installed).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11180. In this case the pattern |00 00 00 01|ftyp is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8944.
