A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.5 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Security Feature. Integer overflow in Apple Quicktime before 7.2 on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted (1) title and (2) author fields in an SMIL file, related to improper calculations for memory allocation.
The weakness was released 07/12/2007 by David Vaartjes with Apple (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2394 since 04/30/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25704 (QuickTime < 7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115541 (Apple QuickTime 7.2 Not Installed).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5485.
