A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Ångström Distribution Project Narcissus (unknown version). This vulnerability affects the function configure_image of the file backend.php. Narcissus is vulnerable to remote code execution via improper input handling in its image configuration workflow. Specifically, the backend.php script fails to sanitize the release parameter before passing it to the configure_image() function. This function invokes PHP’s passthru() with the unsanitized input, allowing attackers to inject arbitrary system commands. Exploitation occurs via a crafted POST request, resulting in command execution under the web server’s context.
The weakness was disclosed by Dun. The advisory is available at raw.githubusercontent.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-10033 since 08/05/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
