Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). This vulnerability affects the function restore_all. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A regression error in the restore_all code path of the 4/4GB split support for non-hugemem Linux kernels on Red Hat Linux Desktop and Enterprise Linux 4 allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2006. The weakness was shared 08/23/2006 by Marcel Holtmann (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2932 since 06/09/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22279 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0617)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31532), Tenable (22279), SecurityFocus (BID 19664†), OSVDB (28120†) and Secunia (SA21605†). The entries VDB-2256, VDB-2254, VDB-2255 and VDB-2257 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
